Note

2011. At the time I was very interested in redevelopment and in how workers were treated. Even before the 'gap-eul' relationship — the power gap between the stronger and the weaker party — became a public concern, I was especially drawn to relationships between the strong and the weak. Looking back, I think it came from my parents teaching me realistically about money from early on (my childhood was, relatively speaking, hard to call comfortable), and from a residency I did around the same time at Artforum Rhee in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, where I was influenced by artists who threw themselves into social problems to try to solve them.

During this period, under the title 90%, I interviewed and photographed people around me who saw themselves as manual workers. In a similar vein, I did performances and photo work about Ruwon, a redevelopment complex that was a live issue at the time. (Ruwon City: as the redevelopment of the Gajeong-dong area in Seo-gu, Incheon moved forward, disagreements between Incheon City and the Ministry of Land, among others, turned the area into something like a ghost town for three or four years. People who had suddenly had to put their homes up for sale, and residents who stayed on nearby, were the ones who suffered.) On the whole, I was fairly pleased with how 90% and the Ruwon City work turned out.

Later, though, through various experiences I came to feel that my interest in the thesis of labor and in the social power gap carried a view that was too biased and self-serving. This happened after 2015, while I was questioning my very reasons for making art, and I felt a kind of guilt. Above all, I struggled with the fact that, in the end, I was using labor and social problems as a means. So I stopped the related work and plans. (This connected to the sense of responsibility I felt about handling issues such as the Sewol ferry disaster in the project-style exhibition The Pleasure, whose trophy? in 2015.)

Of course, the social phenomena and unjust incidents I mostly learn about through the media, and capital and the power gap, are still major concerns for me. But I keep thinking that making work about them calls for responsibility and a serious attitude. Ironically, the second image in the 90% series — a photograph of a worker in a factory — was one I liked very much. While it was in storage, the frame's glass broke and the middle of the photograph was damaged. It felt as if I had treated labor and workers too lightly and ended up wounding them instead. It became a chance to reflect, and that made it a work I cherish even more.
