Note
What does it mean to be moved?
One exhibition that stays vividly in my mind is Hiroshi Sugimoto's show at Leeum. The series of sea photographs hung in a dark room held me in place. I stood there gazing at the horizon stretched across the dark walls until the gallery closed, and the sensation, as if stamped into me, felt both familiar and strange. I had chances to see those works several times before and after that show, but however much I think about it now, none matched the intensity of that moment. Why did it feel so distinctly different then? That sensation, which set me resonating as questions and answers chased one another, could clearly never be revived outside that moment.

During a residency in Busan in 2014–2015, I set out to trace Hiroshi Sugimoto's seascapes and photographed the winter horizon at Gwangalli every day for three months. Despite mishaps like dropping the camera into the sea, I took about 2,500 photographs. Only two frames satisfied me.

Later in the exhibition I installed fans to keep the work fluttering and moving, trying to recreate the surface of the water through the light reflecting off it. Visitors who stepped into the 'sea' found more vinyl walls, crude objects, and a drawing called Ophelia.
