Note
The Cake Sharing was a residency program and open studio exhibition planned by O Jongwon and run from 2 January to 2 March 2013.
In October 2012, Gallery Palais de Seoul asked me about using its space, and at first we met to discuss a group exhibition. Along the way I said I wanted to run a project rather than a simple group show, and the gallery agreed. Of course, I kept how it would actually run completely secret. Drawing on my own experience, I wanted to talk about systems such as residencies and about the practical goals of young artists, so I decided to create the 'O Jongwon Residency' program.
In December 2012 I held an open call through Neolook and other channels and first selected five artists Over several meetings I explained how it would work; we planned to use the exhibition space as residency studios while keeping it strictly secret from the gallery and the outside. I set one precondition: we had to be able to get together for a meal (or drinks) at least a few times a week. I thought one problem many residencies share is that using them pushes you into compulsory commuting. The artists readily agreed.
On 2 January 2013, the project began as we wrote and announced a manifesto. The artists and I went to the gallery almost every day. Along the way we set up a bar inside the gallery to earn some money, and began remodeling and decorating the interior to our own taste. The gallery had never intended any of this, so there were real clashes, and at one point we came close to being thrown out.
Because of the security system we couldn't spend nights in the gallery, but we came every day, worked freely, ate, and sold drinks, and a party atmosphere formed naturally every day. I think this drew a good response: with almost no promotion, many visitors (probably mostly young artists like me) and some fairly well-known critics heard about it and came by. Seeing this, the gallery extended the period from the one month originally promised to two. Of course, we had no intention of leaving until they actually threw us out. I think of it as a kind of squat.
After the first month the lineup changed: 서유진 and 양반김 (a team) joined, and it continued in a similar format. During this time we often talked among ourselves about what form young artists should take, and held small roundtables. In the end the agreed period ran out and we were thrown out of the gallery. Before leaving, as a final act, I released 100 bugs inside the gallery.

Donation box for artist Kim Kira and the Incheon Art Platform residency that selected him
2013 / Installation, popcorn, 2013
I installed it on 12 January and started collecting; along with the manifesto, it was made as one of the key items of The Cake Sharing. We collected throughout the project (12 January – 8 February 2013), and I tried to be on hand at all times to talk with visitors. Some people gave without signing the record, and most took part already understanding what the project was about.
The total came to 22,230 won. On 22 February I contacted Art Platform to hand over the donation. After two or three attempts, I was told by text message that they could not accept it. As an aside, I remember the staff member who took the call laughing, clearly amused, after hearing the amount.
I am still keeping the money, and I expect it to become the seed for a future work. — made by O Jongwon

바 The bar
The bar we set up inside during the project. The artists each developed their own cocktails and sold them cheaply, and the money we made was a real help in running the project and in what came after.

Meals together
The artists gathered every day and talked about all sorts of things over food and drinks. There was never a rule forcing anyone to take part, yet for two months we got together and spent time together every day.
