2016년, 대한민국 18대 대통령의 탄핵 관련 이슈로 인해 내 고향인 서울을 포함하여 각지에서 많은 움직임이 있었다. 이때 우연히 나는 전라남도 광주를 방문하게 되었는데, 내가 방문하였을 때에도 탄핵 집회가 열리고 있었다. 전라남도 광주는 한국의 민주화 운동에 주요한 거점과도 같은 곳이었다.
2010년 초 온라인 커뮤니티에서 ‘일베’가 등장하였을 때 부터 전통적 이데올로기를 바탕으로 한 대립 구조에 관심을 가지기 시작하여, 2016년 18대 대통령의 탄핵 관련 이슈부터 직접 현장 방문을 하게 되었다. 2017년에는 로컬 레지던시에 참여하게 되었고, 민주화 운동이 지금 시점에 가지는 다양한 이야기들을 수집 및 경험해보았다.
In 2016, the impeachment of South Korea's 18th president set off a great deal of movement across the country, including in Seoul, my hometown. Around that time I happened to visit Gwangju, and an impeachment rally was going on there too. Gwangju has long been a central site of Korea's democratization movement.
In 2017 I joined a residency in Gwangju. It made me pay closer attention to the democratization movement and taught me about the political ideologies and conflicts that still divide Korea. Since then I have kept going back to Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul and to Gwangju to observe, and in 2019 I went to Hong Kong to witness its pro-democracy movement.
My interest in confrontations built on traditional ideologies began in the early 2010s, when 'Ilbe' appeared in online communities. With the impeachment in 2016, I started going to the sites myself. In 2017 I took part in a local residency and gathered, and lived through, the many stories the democratization movement carries today.

자료집 『당신의 밤, 나의 새벽』 Your night, my dawn (book)
사진·에세이 자료집, 2020–2021 / Photo and essay book, 2020–2021
2020년 한국문화예술위원회(아르코)의 지원을 받아 제작한 사진 및 에세이 자료집. 2016년부터 광화문 광장, 광주 등에 관심을 가지고 관찰한 것을 시작으로 하여 몇 년간의 에세이와 함께 2019년 홍콩에 방문하며 촬영한 사진들을 책으로 엮었다. 2020년 12월 31일 자료집 제작이 완성되었으나 검수 과정에서 일부 문맥적 오류와 오탈자들을 발견하였고, 이를 수정 및 보완, 재디자인 한 버전을 2021년 1월 10일 부로 업데이트 하였다. 훗날 기회비용이 생기는 대로 수정본을 제작 및 출간할 생각이다. 일단 먼저 배포된 1쇄의 경우 양해 메시지를 첨부하였다.
A photo and essay book made in 2020 with support from Arts Council Korea (ARKO). It starts from what I had been observing at Gwanghwamun Square, in Gwangju and elsewhere since 2016, and brings several years of essays together with photographs I took in Hong Kong in 2019. The book was finished on 31 December 2020, but in proofreading I found some contextual errors and typos, so I corrected, supplemented and redesigned it and posted the updated version on 10 January 2021. I plan to produce and publish the revised edition when I have the means. Copies of the first printing that had already gone out were sent with a note of apology.

본 영상은 2017년 진행한 인터뷰를 바탕으로, 2019년까지 광주를 방문하며 모은 클립들과 합쳐 만든 작업이다. 인터뷰의 내용은 광주 민주화 운동 당시 관련인이자 방관자였던 한 사람의, 지금 시간 대에서 과거의 사건을 회상하는 내용이 주이다.
This video is built on an interview I did in 2017, combined with clips I gathered on visits to Gwangju up to 2019. The interview is mostly one person — someone who was both involved in and a bystander to the Gwangju democratization movement — looking back on those events from the present.
